On fist words I would like to apologize for writing in english



Vilnius



Vilnius populiation is in about 600 000 inhabitans. According to the 2001 census by the Vilnius Regional Statistical Office, there were 542,287 inhabitants in Vilnius city municipality, 57.8% of which were Lithuanians, 18.7% Poles, 13.9% Russians, 4.0% Belarusians; the remaining have indicated other nationalities or refused to answer.
Vilnius lies 312 km from the Baltic Sea and Klaipėda, the chief Lithuanian seaport. Vilnius is connected by highways to other major Lithuanian cities, such as Kaunas (102 km away), Šiauliai (214 km away) and Panevėžys (135 km away).

The current area of Vilnius is 402 km². Buildings cover 20.2% of the city and in the remaining areas, greenery (43.9%) and waters (2.1%) prevail.

I'm not neccessarily the best person to answer, considering my "SSC roots", but I would like to say one thing: aciu for showing a little-known part of Baltics here at Talo (generally speaking, Finns have very little idea of Baltics outside Estonia)! Vilnius, like the other Lithuanian cities, differs greatly from its counterparts in neighbouring countries. Its baroque architecture and hills remind me greatly of the mediterranean region, as weird as it may sound.

What I know, based on meeting few Lithuanians in person (Jonas, blimey, Singing Tram, Ozelis, etc.), is that the people there are very friendly and nice. Vilnius and Riga remain part of my "places to visit" list - until someday

I've seen a few Vilnius threads as well is SSC, but I really don't care, cause the city tends surprise me each time I see some new photos. It never ceases to amaze me how well the old town blends with NCC. Quite the contrast, but if it works, it works.

These scenes are just wonderful. There's nothing quite like this anywhere in Finland. Even the very few old towns that we have, are very boring. Nothing to mention, really. It's stupid; we Finns (nimbys) want to preserve old areas and buildings without actually keeping them alive.

For me Vilnius is one of the top cities in Europe ... I loved it so much when I was there.

You're right, MoloX: the old and the new both have their place, and they work very well together because one is not crammed into the other.

This is the sad truth about Helsinki: EVERY logo is made of cheap looking plastic from banks to fast food restaurants, with few expections.


I visited Stockholm last summer and I was amazed. Swedes seem to understand how to make elegant looking logos that fit well to the buildings looks. The use of different materials is so much better than in Finland.

Thanks jozikas for showing us these photos. I've also seen several threads in SSC aswell, but it's always a pleasure to see pictures from this city and nice to finally have a thread here too.

Aciu, Jozikai, thank you so much for the new installment, and once again you show us so many different faces of Vilnius!

The first photo has the feel of a painting ... the colors and mood are just beautiful. And what a charming jewel the Elektra Building is!

I had a good laugh at the funeral of the corrupt mayor but it is sad to know that people feel such an expression of public distrust is warranted.

And thank you particularly for the thorough series of photos of the Cathedral! As you know I'm something of a church freak

Vilnius old town is one of my favorite maps in my favorite computer game, Ghost Recon. Some familiar looking places there
