Mikä on Taloforum?
All I see up there are flat-tops. Now why is it that I have such a severe aversion to flat-tops?I agree with you, flat roofs cause the dull skyline. The main reason for building them may be the Functionalism of Alvar Aalto, who is considered almost a god in Finnish architecture. They generally don't endure the hard Nordic climate for over two decades or so, until they must be repaired, but Aalto was in favor of them, like his foreign colleagues. Large areas of white and light-grey box-like apartment blocks were built in the 1970s, when they had no alternatives: people moved from the country to cities, so the state had to produce plenty of apartments as fast as possible. However, the population growth is decreasing all the time, like the expansion of Helsinki metropolitan area, so there is no need to hurry any longer. Beautiful apartment blocks with different, tilted roofs, could be built if the maximal cost effectiveness thinking were faded away.
I think there is an excellent reason.
Just look at the pictures above: a vast sea of flat-tops.
Flat-tops = nothingness, boredom, unacceptable architecture, buildings that shouldn't be built.
There has been a general decline concerning roofs, and the special Character that a designed roof area can add to a building. In fact, this is an aspect of modern architecture that I find downright perverse. It's like cutting off the face right above the nose rather than exploring the noble forehead further up.
I HATE flat-tops!!!!!!! They are a disgrace and an abomination. I
I like an articulated, varied roof line.

Besides, Finland has the fourth least housing space per capita in the whole of Europe. Like the new Hki mayor said, even if the population will not grow significantly from now on, there will still be need for a lot of new apts. All I see up there are flat-tops. Like the new Hki mayor said, even if the population will not grow significantly from now on, there will still be need for a lot of new apts.Yeah, but the problem is (I read this on Kiinteistölehti if I remember correctly) that even the new flats are very small compared to the European average. I think it has something to do with the fact that building companies know that finns in general are accustomed to live in small apartments, so they make the new apartments also small because they know they can still sell them at high price. Making a maximum profit is the driving force behind this all, i guess.
Large areas of white and light-grey box-like apartment blocks were built in the 1970sA veritable visual nightmare--how depressing!

JR kirjoitti:Nyt Cirrus on jo varmaan Suomen korkein asuinrakennus.Kyllä, olen samaa mieltä kanssasi. Cirrus on vähän liiankin tavallisen näköinen torni talo.
