Lontoon "urbaani sydän", eli periaattessa City of Westminster, on hyvin pieni kooltaan. Se on helposti käveltävissä eikä City of Londonkaan ole kamalan matkan päässä.

Kävellen Big Benille on todellakin juuri tuo muutama kilsa, vaikkakaan mitään Oxford Streetiä pitkin sinne ei kannata mennä. Juutut muuten ruuhkaan.

- Lontoon metro!

- Soho. Lontoon parhaimmistoa. Kuten sanoin Aukea.netissä: Soho on nykyajan bling-bling hedonismin kehto Britannian pääkaupungissa. Yöklubit, kahvilat, pubit, ravintolat ja peep show -paikat reunustavat sen kapeita katuja. Rahaa kuluu alkoholiin, aivosoluja kuolee massoittain. Öisin alue hehkuu urbaanissa valoloisteessa. Lontoota parhaimmillaan: rajoja rikkova, kosmopoliittinen, hienostunut ja toisinaan vähemmän huoliteltu. Päivisin se on Chinatownia lukuunottamatta kuollut. Soho löytyy Piccadilly Circuksen, Oxford Streetin ja Leicester Squaren välistä.

- West Endin katujen fiilis. Tämä kuva kertoo mielestäni kaiken oleellisen:
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7143/katua20xk.jpg

- City of London. Upeata modernia arkkitehtuuria, finanssimahtien voimaa, pukumiehiä ja jakkupukuisia naisia Starbucks-sumppejaan ja tupakkaa vetämässä tauolla pilvenpiirtäjien juurella. St Paulin tuomiokirkko peittooaa yliarvostetun Big Benin helposti. Samoin tekee Swiss Re:n dildon muotoinen toimitalo.

- Canary Wharf. Kannattaa tarkastaa nopeasti. Itselleni tunnin vierailu alueella riitti mukavasti. Sinne pääsee helposti ja suoraan Jubilee Lineä pitkin (otat vain Piccadilly Linen länteen, vaihdat Green Parikilla Jubileehen), tosin se sijaitsee Zone 2:lla joten joudut maksamaan lipusta hieman enemmän.

- Tower Bridge.

- Picaddilly Circus. Seisoin siinä mainostaulujen lomassa, tippa melkein linsissä nauttien viimeisestä illasta maailman hienoimmassa kaupungissa mukavassa +10 asteen lämmössä. Tampereella Grendyn tekstarin mukaan samaan aikaan -15 :D. Ipodissa soi Coldplayn "Speed of Sound", joka tahtinsa ja musiikkivideonsa (bändi soittamassa ison screenin edessä) sopi mainiosti fiilikseen.

- Leicester Square. Hieno ja elävä katu Sohon sydämessä.

- Chinatown.

- Oxford Street. Koe se ruuhka, se ostajien huuma.

Ei niin upeeta Lontoossa:

- Westminster Big Beneineen, Westminster Abbeyneen ja muuta. Käy siellä nopeasti kerran, koe paikka ja lähde pois. Pelkkiä turisteja ja tylsyyttä. Ei ihmeellinen mesta.

Kysy vain lisää, vastaan kyllä :)

Just what is London?

Mere words cannot express my feelings. For someone like me who hasn’t travelled all
that much and far, especially not in the recent years, it took the carpet from under my
feet. From the moment I arrived (four hours late – thank you, British Airways!), to the
moment I departed Heathrow (one hour late – thank you, British Airways!), I was stunned
and mesmorized, like living in in a dream. I’m an urban junkie, someone who feels odd
pleasure from all things urban - whether it be architecture, city planning, trams or just
crowd of people on the street – so the trip was pure 100% “shock and awe” for me, amazing
experience following another.

London quite simply changed the way I perceive the world. Nothing will ever be quite the
same for me.

Above all else I am amazed by humankind’s ability to create such a grand urban environment,
a place where people from all ethnic groups and religions live side by side. It doesn’t
matter who you are or where you come from – even if you happen to have been
born in the Siberian steppes as the bastard child of a Chinese prostitute and a Kenyan
short distance runner people still consider you to be just as much Londoner as some
Cockney from East End. Despite the fact that everything in London was so out of this
world and grand, I immediately felt “at home” there. According to some statistics, only
some 50-60% of the people of London are “white British”.

Canary Wharf? It's much more than a bunch of glass-covered skyscrapers
huddled together. The street-level architecture - public plazas, elegant cafes,
restaurants and the rest - are all works of art. As I toured Canary Wharf with Jonas
for an hour, I looked up awe-struck into the twilight sky and declared
Norman Foster & Cesar Pelli my gods.

From here on, forget skyscrapers and high-rises. That's not what London, nor
any other city is about. They're just extra.

Fun fact:
When people usually refer to London, they really mean the “Greater London”
conurbation that’s home to eight million people. Officially, the “City of London”
is just a tiny administrative area situated next to City of Westminster (the
metropolitan heart and soul of London) and home to mere 10,000 residents.
In fact, as bizarre as it may sound, the City of London is the second smallest British city
In terms of population and size.

However, the City is the workplace for over 300,000 people and one of the major
financial centers of the world.

Figures show it the best
- one sixth of the British gross domestic product is generated in the City
- it’s home to the London’s foreign exchange market, which is the largest
- in the world (larger than New York and Tokyo exchanges combined(!))

What exactly is Soho? As far as I'm concerned, it's the hub of contemporary
bling-bling hedonism of the British capital. Night clubs, cafes, pubs, sex shops and
restaurants line its bustling cramped streets. Over there, money evaporates on alcohol
and brain cells die en masse. The entire district glimmers in a kaleidoscope of
urban lights. It really is London at its best: extravagant, refined, cosmopolitan and
other times gritty. I love Soho.

An encounter in Soho: Monkey and the Talking Lamp Post

For Friday evening Jonas organised a small meet with Blimey and Monkey.
While we were waiting for blimey to show up near Leicester Square tube station,
a metallic voice said all of a sudden: "Good evening gentlemen."

We paused, looking at each other, thinking “What the fuck was that?”
It seemed as if the voice had come from a metallic column
mounted on the street. It had a bright red light - a camera that
was eerily similar to the eyes of HAL, the malfunctioning supercomputer
from Kubrick's legendary movie 2001: Space Odyssey.

The conversation went something like this.

Monkey walked to the thing and said, "Who are you? Who's there?"

"I'm a talking lamp post."

"Really? Where are you?"

"I'm a guy stuck inside this lamp post."

"Really? That must be so cool."

A down-hearted sigh. "Not really."

"Can you see us?" Monkey asked.

We look around, paranoid.

"Yeah, I can see you the three of you. So, what are you planning
to do, mates?"

"Do you know any good places to go?"

"Depends. What are you looking for?"

"Cheap beer, nice girls, good food... and the place should
somewhere near here," Monkey explained.

A beat.

"Are you into drugs?"

"Uh . . . no."

"How can you expect to get all four without drugs?"

Quickly afterwards Monkey explained that "the talking lamp post" -
ie. camera-mounted speaker/microphone system - was used for
controlling entry to a pedestrian street. I wonder if the same guy
in the control room often plays the trick for weekend partygoers.
The whole psychedelic encounter was quite memorable.

After hooking up with blimey we went to eat at a fancy Indian restaurant.
Around midnight we ended up at Monkey's place, drinking beer and
talking about a variety of subjects, including:

- EU integration, agricultural subsidies and the lack of proper
R&D funding for Europe

- European future in general

- Bridgette Bardot

- SSC

- American hegemony and Niall Ferguson's book "Colossus - Rise
and Fall of American Empire"

- Racism and prejudice

- Investment and corporate culture

- Asian porn

One memorable quote from the evening comes from Monkey.
To quote: "The reason why America is so succesful is that they
give people what they want. Skyscrapers. And porn."

We concluded the night by building a miniature skyscraper out of
empty beer cans on the table, christening it the Turning Torso. I said
goodbyes and headed out to the streets of nocturnal London.
With Coldplay's excellent X&Y album playing in my iPod, I strolled
down the near-empty Oxford Street, mesmerized by the beautiful
atmosphere and jumping over passed out hobos.

City of London? If you don't have suit or elegant design wear you'll stick
out from the crowd in the City like a sore thumb. This is where you ought to be
stylishly dressed from top to bottom in Versace, Armani or Hugo Boss if you
want to melt into the flow. The district itself is a wonderful fusion of modern and
old architecture, a real testament to the power of Financial and Corporate Might.
It’s not neccessarily the place where to go if you want to see some night life,
though.

Rest of West End outside Soho? London's heart and soul. 'Nuff said. (although
some of the stuff here is from Soho, too.)

London's "Tube" was one of the things I also fell in love with. I remember standing on the platform of Russel Square station, my iPod playing The Smiths' melancholic British pop tune "Well I Wonder". The place is cramped, dimly-lit and the pervasive all present stench assaults your senses, but the atmosphere is out of this world. (Yes, London is actually dirty and probably far less cleaner than most people would think -- I loved it myself) I knew that I was using one of the most iconic underground transportation systems in the world, one that embodies much of London's history and feel.

As guitar and drums start to pound, their British-esque melody connecting with the hearing, the band's vocalist Jim Morissey starts to sing Well, I wonder, I look around at the commuters and marvel their diversity. All of a sudden, a breeze of wind from the tunnel gently touchs my face. The train is coming. It comes to a stop by the station, I step aboard.

The whole experience was crowned when the recorded announcement says me the famous words "Mind the gap" (or as it's said there Moind tö gäp) and a strikingly beautiful Indian girl walks in and stands next to me in the passenger compartment. She was beautiful and I was ready to cut my wrists for not bringing my camera with me.

Every time I listen to "Well I Wonder" or Coldplay, my mind goes back to London.
How about Westminster with its Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and all
those famous places and landmarks? Touristy and cliched. Nothing special,
really -- by London's standards, that is.

Huh, huh. Kiitokset tuosta raportista.

Hienot ilmat sattuneet reissusi ajaksi. :) (ainakin kuvauspäiväksi)

Hienot kuvasi vaikuttivat minun vähäpätöiseen Lontoo-käsitykseeni. Kuvien perusteella saa paikasta melkein eteläeurooppalaisen vaikutelman vai johtuuko se pelkästään aurinkoisesta ilmasta? Jokatapauksessa kuvat ovat hyviä. Piti ihan kaverillekin näyttää.

Huippuhienoja kuvia. ;)

Jatketaan kuva kollaasia vähän kauempaa keskustasta lontoon pankki ja pilvenpiirtäjä alueelta.
